Infusing Disability Competency And Disability Literacy In Health Care Provider Education
Course Description
This survey course is an introduction to disability issues for health professionals. It covers disability-related preferred etiquette practices, disability demographics, Medical and Social Models of disability, quality of life issues, culture, risk factors, secondary conditions, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, and major public policy and ethical issues.
Course Goals
Increase the capacity of health professionals and health educators to support the health and wellness of people with disabilities through increasing their disability knowledge and expertise.
Increase the delivery of services that are culturally sensitive and non-discriminatory.

Advanced Studies in Specific Populations I & II People with Disabilities
Course Description
This two-semester course is designed for the practicing clinician and explores modifications to the traditional history and physical examination to better serve the needs of people with disability. Specific modules of instruction are as follows:
- Culture of Disability
- History and Review of Systems
- General Assessment and Vital Signs
- Transfers and Skin Examination
- Examination of the Chest and Abdomen
- Urgent Care or Emergency Room
- Examination of the Musculoskeletal System
- Neurological Examination
- Examination of the Gynecologic and Urologic Systems
- Psychosocial Issues and Chronic Disability
Specific attention is given to the Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and to the prevention of secondary conditions. Clinicians are invited to explore their responses to people with disabilities in their clinic settings as well as utilize their current patient contacts to illustrate and implement specific learning points.
